First and foremost I am a photographer, so I feel bit like I’m cheating on my photos when I say, I bloody love making wedding films. They just always give me all the feels and my couples love them too!
It doesn’t take a genius to realise weddings are expensive and wedding films often don’t make the cut for wedding essentials. However not having a wedding film is one of the commonest regrets couples have about their day. In my experience, films capture so much more than photos do. Pictures capture a snapshot where as films demonstrate the atmosphere and transport you straight back to your big day, allowing you to relive it over and over again. The banter, the nerves and of course all the bad dancing. Your wedding will flash by and will feel like a blur, so it’s great to be able to have the moments you miss on film. How often do you get your nearest and dearest in the same place? It’s great to have these moments capturing in moving image. When ever I deliver a final product to my couples, the video is always the thing that they get emotional about the most and it’s always the first thing that they share with their friends and family, particularly if for any reason they haven’t been able to make the day due to illness or distance.
There are so many wedding film options out there, it’s easy to find one that fits you. I like the idea of a drama of long cinematic, full wedding films, where the whole things beautifully filmed in slow motion and fills you with anticipation. However this is not me, I’m way to rough and ready for that. After about 10 minutes I get bored and end up skipping bits. I much prefer films that show all the fun and excited atmosphere of a wedding, films that don’t feel like they need a big revel and that are easily sharable.
This is what I create short highlight films that last around 3 minutes and are set to music. They are non traditional films that are jam packed, full of all the juicy bits. Film’s that chuck you right into the atmosphere of the day, giving you all the feels. My friend’s often mention they cry at them when they don’t even know the couple!
I don’t record sound and film in short blasts as the majority of the time I film along side photographing a wedding. Due to music licensing, I always pick the songs for the video. However I do try to fit the tempo with the feel of the wedding, for example if its a relaxed day, I tend to use a more mellow song but if it’s a party wedding I always use a fast tempo song. I’m usually at the wedding for around 9 hours, so I can cover the prep and of course the dancing. I LOVE filming guests rocking out on the dance floor, all the laughter at speeches and all the disgusted shot faces.
I think of photography and videography as equal importance and feel the one compliments the other. My photography is fun, relaxed and no creative and so are my films. They are fast passed, bad ass and are definitely not boring. But don’t take my word for it, read what my couples had to say below.
